What is Add-X?A Wileyfox smartphone “with Add-X” is a phone that offers the usual great experience associated with a Wileyfox phone, but with the addition of offers and ads that appear on the phone’s lockscreen when it is woken up, while still providing full access to personal notifications, date and time.
How does it work? The phones feature lock-screen technology that makes an offer or advert appear on screen almost every time the phone is ‘woken up’. Users can swipe left to find out more, or simply swipe right to unlock and use your phone as normal When offers appear you still have full access to personal notifications, date, and time within the lock-screen. The advertising subsidises the cost of the SIM-free mobile phone, without being bound to an Operator. Which means, not only can consumers buy a better phone for less, but during the lifetime of the phone they will be presented with many great offers that can, over time, save the user more than the cost of the phone.
Is the money raised through ads passed onto the consumer?Yes, Add-X customers benefit through the saving they make when they purchase a Wileyfox with Add-X.
Are consumers not fatigued by adverts in their life?As consumers we are surrounded by options to consume things subsidised by advertising. It’s important that consumers have influence over which adverts they see, which Add-X provides through AI and machine-learning technology. Savvy consumers often proactively look for these options. Consider: - Spotify Free – with ads - Kindle – subsidised cost with offers - Facebook It just hasn’t been done like this on a smartphone before in the UK. And with the Wileyfox Add-X range, we take this one step further because the ads are personalised to maximise the experience over time.
What are the prices / savings of the Add-X range?Spark+ with Add X - £69.99 (vs. £119.99 RRP, saving £50 / 42%) Spark X with Add-X - £79.99 (vs. £139.99 RRP, saving £60 / 43%) Swift 2 with Add-X - £99.99 (vs. £159.99 RRP, saving £60 / 38%) Swift 2 Plus with Add-X - £119.99 (vs. £189.99 RRP, saving £70 / 37%) Swift 2 X with Add-X (coming soon) - £139.99 (vs. £219.99 RRP, saving £80 / 36%)
When and where is the Add-X range available? The range is available from Wednesday 6th December, from all the Wileyfox usual retailers, including www.Wileyfox.com, Amazon, Carphone Warehouse, ao.com, eBay, Very and more.
Is this not a further invasion on the consumer?Consumers can choose if they want to buy a Wileyfox phone with Add-X or not. We know that every consumer is different and looks for different things in their smartphone. We believe there are consumers who value a competitive price point above other features. We want our consumers to be happy with the products they use, so only consumers who want and choose to buy a smartphone with ‘Add-X’ will receive the Add-X experience. Wileyfox is committed to responding to customers’ feedback and will adapt to reflect consumers’ preferences.
Can a customer unsubscribe to stop receiving the lockscreen ads?Yes. Customers may unsubscribe at any time by contacting our customer service team with your device and account details and making a payment of £40 to cover the advertising subsidy. Upon receipt of the payment, a software update will be sent to your device within 24 hours and, upon installation of the update, lockscreen advertising will be removed from your device.
Are there any limitations on the products that can advertise – e.g. will alcohol and tobacco companies be allowed to advertise?Yes, there are limitations, those under the age of 18 will not receive any adverts or offers from alcohol or tobacco brands nor gambling, porn, money lending or any other 18+ sensitive content.
How can you control messaging to children?During the setup process – which is almost identical to the usual Android process – users will be asked their age and gender.
Are you sharing data with your advertising partners and how is this protected?Protecting customer data is a priority. No customer data is shared with any advertisers or other parties. Customer profiling data (age and gender) is only used by Wileyfox to tailor the customer experience. If a consumer swipes left to engage with the offer or ad, that interaction is with the brand directly, so the consumer can choose how much data they want to share with the brand.
Are the ads generic or personalised to the user in anyway?During the setup process – which is almost identical to the usual Android setup process – users will be asked their age and sex. As the Add-X platform continues to evolve our proprietary AI and machine-learning technology will take into consideration users’ preferences to ensure the offers that they receive are relevant. Each time the consumer swipes left or right, the AI and machine-learning technology learns a little more about their preferences to ensure the offers they receive are relevant.
How do you earn loyalty points in Phase 2?Wileyfox customers who have opted into Add-X will be able to earn loyalty points through their level of engagement with the Add-X platform.
How many times a day will the user be exposed to an ad?Almost every time a user unlocks their device, an offer or ad will appear.
Will the user get repeated ads that they are not interested in?Each time the consumer swipes left or right on an ad, the AI and machine-learning technology learns a little more about their preferences to ensure the offers they receive are relevant. While the machine-learning technology understands the consumer duplicates may be shown.
Can a consumer return the phone if they don’t like the experience?A consumer has the usual rights of return from the retailer they purchase the phone from.
Do the adverts impact my data usage? The impact on data is negligible – less than 10-20MB per month. The Add-X platform is dependent on your data connection and speed. There is no impact on data once the phone is unlocked.
What is the impact of the adverts on my battery life?We have optimised the handsets’ power management systems to ensure they perform to the same standard as Wileyfox phones without Add-X.
Does this feature impact any other features on the phones? E.g. does it still have Truecaller, etc?All the existing Wileyfox features operate on the phone as usual… unlock, display settings on the lockscreen, Truecaller, etc.
Does Add-X still work when the user is roaming?Yes.
Does choosing Add-X affect the functionality of using fingerprint or PIN lock?Non-evasive, upon lock /unlock the offer or ad is placed before swiping to engage.
Does the performance of the device become affected? No.
Are the offers and ads customisable either through AI or proactive settings? This feature will be available in Phase 2.
Is there a potential that consumers can hack the phone to remove the platform? There’s a lot of creatiive way users can take advantage of the device and while we are not challenging them, the £40 opt-out is a safe key to ensure your warranty stays intact.
What about potential advertising partners? If there are any partners interested in advertising with Add-X, please reach out to us at email@example.com.
